Felix Rivera-Melendez, born on June 10th, 1927, in Salinas, Puerto Rico, peacefully passed away on October 12th, 2023, at the VA Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He was 96 years old.
Felix is survived by his loving spouse, Natividad Rivera, and leaves behind a legacy of a tight-knit family. He was one of 9 siblings. He is remembered by his 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a recently born great-great-grandchild.
A proud Marine Corps veteran who served during the Korean War, Felix received the National Defense Service Medal for his honorable service.
Felix made his journey from Puerto Rico to New York in the early 1940s, eventually settling in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where he called home for over 60 years. He was a well-known figure in the community, having owned a local candy store for more than 25 years. His generosity and kindness were legendary, and he was loved by many, even if he did give the neighborhood kids a few cavities along the way.
Felix was a devoted member of the Knickerbocker (now New Jerusalem) United Methodist Church for over 50 years, finding solace and community in his faith.
An avid reader of newspapers, his favorites were the New York Daily News and El Vocero. He loved discussing current events, history, and politics. Cooking was a passion, and he relished preparing meals for loved ones. In his kitchen, he was king, and if you got in his way, you'd know it.
Felix had a special connection with animals, rescuing and nursing countless rabbits, birds, cats, and dogs back to health.
Television brought him joy, especially watching "The Price is Right" and "Let's Make a Deal." He was an ardent baseball fan, supporting the Yankees and the Pirates. When the Yankees played, you could find him sitting outside, listening to the game on his radio. In the summer he enjoyed traveling to Coney Island to eat clams and oysters on the boardwalk.
Christmas was his favorite holiday, and he delighted in adorning his windows with lights and playing festive music for all to enjoy. His larger-than-life personality was infectious. He had a passion for dancing, singing, and giving to others in need. He never hesitated to help those less fortunate and was known for his generosity.
Above all, Felix's true happiness came from being surrounded by the people he loved. He leaves behind cherished memories and a lasting legacy of love, laughter, and a life well-lived.
