Lucia D’Abbene in Cottone, age 91, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, in Yaphank, New York, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 28, 1933, in Caltabellotta, Sicily, where her life began in the traditions, warmth, and resilience that she carried with her always.
Lucia was predeceased by her beloved husband, Nicolò Mariano Cottone, and by her son, Salvatore Cottone, both of whom she now joins in eternal rest. She is survived by her two children, Nicolino Cottone, Salvatore Cottone and Maria Teresa Pereira, who were the pride and purpose of her life.
She leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren: Rosalinda, Nicolas, Damiano, Tressa, Samanta, Nicolo, and Lucia, as well as six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her great-granddaughter Nicoletta, and is survived by Luca, Mia, Elena, Julia, and Giovanni, who will grow up hearing stories of their Nonna’s love, strength, and humor.
Lucia was the heart of the Cottone family. Known for her famous meatballs, her delicious home-cooked meals, and her gift for crocheting, she filled her home with warmth and comfort. She had a playful, goofy spirit and a social butterfly’s charm—always ready for a chat, a laugh, or the latest neighborhood gossip. She found joy in “thrifting” for hidden treasures and spent many happy hours at her local senior center.
Her life was defined by generosity, sacrifice, and the deep love she poured into each generation. Lucia created a legacy woven from tradition, laughter, and the countless small acts of care that made her family feel safe, connected, and loved.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
