Luz Mercedes Castillo, a beloved mother, sister, daughter, and educator, passed away on February 2, 2024 in Brooklyn, New York. She was born on September 9, 1936 in Pimentel, Dominican Republic to Adelaida Taveras Amparo and Ramon Armando Castillo.
Luz's life was one of love and dedication to her family and the pursuit of knowledge. She received her Bachelor's degree in education from Pedro Herriquez Urena National University and went on to become a respected professor for over thirty years. Her impact as an educator extended far beyond the classroom; she touched countless lives with her wisdom and kindness.
Those who knew Luz remember her as a vibrant soul who could light up any room with her infectious smile and warm personality. Her generosity knew no bounds. If you asked anyone who knew her, they would say she had a wonderful sense of humor and voracious appetite for food. She had the ability to make all those she met feel valued and loved. Luz's greatest joy came from spending time with her family; they were the center of her world.
She is survived by her children Jesus and Maria, as well as her grandchildren, Steve, Brian, Jasmine, Emilio, Armandito, Joel, and Camille. Their lives are forever enriched by the love she shared with them. She is also survived by her siblings, Armando, Nancy, Esperanza, Patria, Griselda, Mirtha, Miligros, and Adaljisa. Additionally, Luz leaves behind cherished memories for all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
The legacy of Luz Mercedes Castillo will live on through the countless lives she touched during her lifetime. While we mourn our loss here on Earth today, we take comfort in knowing that heaven has gained an angel whose light will continue to shine brightly upon us all.
