Ruth Mewborn

Ruth Eleanor Webb Mewborn was born in the Flatrock section of Shelby, NC on June 18th 1933, to Robert Lee Webb and Ophelia Smith ..she was an only child

She was educated in Shelby and graduated from Cleveland High School
In 1952 Ruth joined the great migration and headed north to New York City.
She made her way to Brooklyn and lived with her friend Edith Hord, her husband William and their son Robert. The Hords showed Ruth her way around the city including spending time going to Harlem clubs, baseball games at Ebbets field in Brooklyn and a variety of restaurants throughout the city

Ruth caught the eye of Calvin Mewborn while in Brooklyn and they fell head over heels in love and soon married. After training to be a nurse she began her nursing career at Coney Island Hospital -Ruth later worked in Medical Records at Menorah Home and Hospital in Bushwick, for over 25 years and retired from there in 1997.

Ruth was a devoted member of PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH in Bushwick Brooklyn and was part of the Hospitality Club ..the church and the people in it were important to her spirituality and well being

Ruth especially enjoyed attending all of her children and grandchildren’s graduations ..
From pre-school to college graduations and loved a good barbecue and restaurant outing with the family
She loved spending her days in court tv with Judge Judy, Judge Matthis, Divorce Court, Hot Bench, The Peoples Court, America’s Court, Judge Karen ..and when court was over it was Family Feud with Steve Harvey how ever many times it was on during the day and night…
And she fanned out over anything starring Denzel Washington

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Calvin Mewborn and her mother Ophelia Pratt and her father Robert Lee Webb
She is survived by her sons Robert Andrew Mewborn of South Orange New Jersey, Michael Mewborn of Brooklyn NY, daughter Cynthia Diane Mewborn of Freeport Long Island and her son Calvin Mewborn Jr. of Brooklyn NY- her grandsons Kai Robert Mewborn of South Orange New Jersey, and Marcus Tyler Mewborn of Atlanta Georgia
Her daughter in law Linda Keyes Mewborn and granddaughter in law Sarah Gardner Mewborn
First cousins Dora Smith, Devenia McLeod, and Jimmy Nivens,
and her sister in law Mary L. Smith ..and a host of nieces and nephews
